⇒ To my DW/LJ friends: you gave me my first taste of proper fandom since my early 20s. I'd vanished a bit from fandom spaces before making my LJ account back in 2014, but the wonderful people I've met through the journals have kept me around. Thank you!!

⇒ To the people I've met through tumblr: you are the best part of that stupid website! You welcomed me into the smaller fandoms with an enthusiasm I didn't think was possible these days. That has allowed me to keep my head straight when I fell out of HP fandom.

⇒ To those I've met on Ao3: Most of my fics would never have existed if it hadn't been for you pushing me to write them. In fact, my biggest fic would have stayed at one chapter if you hadn't pushed me to continue it. I owe my fandom experience to you all.

⇒ And, last but not least, discord: Despite that site's issues, I keep going back to it. One person there in particular (who will never see this, so being sappy doesn't bother me XD) has become a real friend, not just someone I met online. I wish you all the happiness in the world. <3

Well, I've never done a mood board before, and I never associate music with either fandoms or characters for some reason. I was bored during lockdown and, since we were one of the few countries who could go out and do (very limited) stuff, I sent one of my mini figures on adventures. This is Shepard from Mass Effect, and some of his lockdown adventures. :)

This is going to be the cheesiest, most overdone thing ever. But the thing I can think of that I can do ten of is actors. Probably not my absolute favourites, but these are the ones I can think of right now. I wanted to do characters, but that would involve choosing favourites from my babies. So, no.

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

Rec a website, huh? Alrighty. I always have certain wikis favourited. Some are better than others. Some are absolute shite. The fan-run ones tend to be the better ones. XD

The HP Lexicon
This is the HP one I always use when I can't remember something from that canon. There is an "official" HP wiki, but it sucks. It includes info from the card games, the video games, and the movies and just claims that it is all canon. Sorry, but no. The books came first, which makes them the only canon.

Marvel wiki at Fandom
This link will actually take you to the Franklin Richards entry, which is what I was last looking at. But, it is a decently maintained wiki. It has info on each appearance the characters have made in the comics. Please note that this version is comics only! At least, from what I can tell. If you want info about the MCU, there is one for that as well. :)

The UESP
This is the absolute BEST fan-run resource I have ever seen. I have been using it for well over 15 years. It's based around the Elder Scrolls game franchise, which includes Oblivion and Skyrim. Not only does it have detailed info on the smallest of characters, but it also has lists of what you can find in each and every dungeon you can crawl through, as well as exactly where to find them.

And here we have the only official wiki on this list. XD Stardew Valley is an amazing game, but it does make you have to reference things every now and then. Especially when you are first starting. It has detailed info on each of the characters, what they like, and their schedules so you can find them when needed.

Well, I stared at this for way too long last night when it was first posted, wondering what the hell to write. Then I got distracted by looking at pretty pics on twitter. :/ So, here we go.

Dear fandom,

When I first started writing fics on Ao3 (a long time ago!), I never thought I would still be here today. Let alone have made so many amazing friends through various platforms. Some I don't see any more, but others I speak to on a near daily basis. Fandom on the journals and tumblr has dragged me kicking and screaming through some of the worst moments of my adult life. And, at the other end of the spectrum, has given me the absolute thrill of having some of my favourite fan writers/artists create content for me. My interests may have varied over the past few years, but I knew I could always come back here.

So, I guess I'm saying thank you to everyone here. For being you.

We got Crash after Zazu the lorikeet died about 9 years ago. She's always been very cautious around us. I'm not ready to get another dog yet, and no one else in the house wants a cat, so I was outvoted on that.

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

Hi! I'm Flynn. I've been doing snowflake since 2017. I do it every year in an attempt to get myself back into writing regularly after the Christmas fests.

So, I do have an intro post that lists what I write and don't write. But here it is for those who don't know me already: I usually post HP fanfiction on here. I will be spreading out this year, however. I want to start posting the fics that I have in mind for Marvel. I have a list of Stardew Valley fics that I have written for emotion100 over the span of about two years. I want to get back into those as well, because it's my comm, but I don't participate currently. -_- I've also written for Mass Effect and Saints Row. Sadly, the SR one is abandoned right now, and the ME ones are a series that I haven't updated in years.

What do I want out of Snowflake this year? More people to talk to! Fandoms don't really matter, I guess, as long as we get along. :)

Year end wrap up. (Technically?)

Not much to wrap up, really. I crashed out. *sigh* Stopped writing in April, restarted for Owls, then vanished again. I swear I will try to do better next year.

So. This past year. Probably tied with the worst I've had? Maybe. That seems to be a shared sentiment this year. But, it is finally over. Two and a half hours left. They've already had the 9PM fireworks for the kids. It's quiet here so far, thankfully. I am so glad we moved here away from all the noise.

As for next year? I really want to write again. It likely won't be in HP, though. I don't know if it's the association with JKR and her transphobia, or whether everything that happened this year has just melted my brain, but I just can't do HP stuff right now. I have a hell of a lot of plots for Marvel fics in my head that I want to try to get out. I also have some in other fandoms as well. So, hopefully something works out. If I can manage to write them, I'll probably make a sideblog on tumblr and a new psued on Ao3 for them. See whether a clean slate can kickstart things in my brain.

It's weird. When I first started writing and publishing on Ao3, I always wondered what it would be that made me stop. I never guessed it would be the author of the fandom I loved turning out to be a raging douchebag. I kind of expect that of actors, but not authors.

So what does this mean? I will be around. I will try to do as much of the snowflchallenge as I can in January. I will be running hp_bunintheoven and hphet as well. Possibly weasleyjumpers in August, depending on interest. Maybe I will be posting other fandoms instead of HP? If I can get them written. Keeping these journals strictly HP has been a rule I made for myself, so it's not like I can't break it.

Question for the artists out there

Is it common to contact a fic writer and offer them art of a fic if they commission you? I didn't do it (largely because I can't justify spending money on something like that this close to Christmas), but I am now curious. Is this a common thing to do? And how does it work with the whole "don't get paid for your work" mentality that fic writers get? Are there different "rules" (for lack of a better word) for artists? No one's ever offered to do art of my fics before, so I have no idea how this works. :)

Clarification for newbies: I offer Australian-themed Christmas cards each year. I will send anywhere in the world, as long as you can give me the full address. Yes, that includes the country as well, please! I am pretty good at guessing American states, but I can't do all of them. :)

There's mostly animals this year, it looks like. I will try to find some of the ones with Santa on the beach, though. What I'm up to
Well, so much for posting regularly. Oh well. I'm still here, so I have another question for everyone.

What are you currently reading?

Or have read recently? Yes, I am looking for recs. XD I do tend to have a bunch of books going at the same time, unfortunately.

I've just finished The Devil All the Time, by Donald Ray Pollock. Holy shit, this book is amazing! It does come with a shit tonne of warnings, though. (Ritual sacrifice, prostitution, murder, serial killers, paedophilia, suicide. And that's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head.) I honestly never thought I'd be willing to read a book with all of that, but it's really good! As in, I-read-it-in-one-day kind of good. I haven't been drawn into a book so fast in a long time. The characters are very well written, the story is compelling, and it has a kind of emotional tug that kept me reading. It was also apparently made into a movie during covid as well, but I haven't seen it.

I'm trying to get into The City we Became, by NK Jemisin. It's told from the perspective of a homeless guy in New York. From what I can tell, it's going to be about the city itself, which is what interested me. I just need to sit down and focus on it.

I also read the most recent Hunger Games prequel. Sunrise on the Reaping. I understand where she's coming from with this one. I do. I just don't think we needed it. I love Haymitch as a character, and getting his backstory was nice. But, as I thought with the first prequel, there was too much squashed into it. With the characters who appeared in the original trilogy making appearances in this one, it felt... contrived, I guess. Maybe I'm just not that into the storyline, but I would say to give this one a miss unless you are a mega fan, sadly.

What I'm up to
Lookit me actually interacting when I said I would. It's almost like I'm a normally functioning human being. XD

Well, like I said last time, I'm not actually doing much fandom-related right now. (That will change, though, because Owls have gone out, but that's another thing entirely.) So what I want to do is have a rant. Please feel free to rant back!

Reader insert fics.

This has always been a controversial topic, I know. I, personally, have always held disdain for them. Mostly because they were incredibly poorly written and basically a teenage girl's fantasy sequence. I tried literally one when I was first getting into HP fics, then ran away from every single other one. My basic search on Ao3 for HP fics cuts the 'reader' tag out completely. So, imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon a /reader fic on tumblr (of all the fucking places!) and I actually liked it!

It wasn't a HP fic. I think the first one I tried was actually a Wolverine fic. Mostly porn, yes. Just written in second person. And it was surprisingly well written. The canon characters were actually in character. What little plot it had made sense. It was formatted. Hell, I think the person had even checked the grammar! And now I've branched out into other Marvel characters. Bucky Barnes, John Walker, Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, Johnny Storm. The last feels a little creepy because he's so young, but still. These fics are actually good!

I did consider the whole "you just want the actor" side of things as well. The problem with that for me is that I'm asexual. So, no. I am very definitely not into these fics because they keep telling me that these characters are doing these things to "me". Although, because most of these characters have such horrendous pasts, a lot of these fics are sort of caretaker fics. So, the character is having a shit day/gets injured/whatever and "reader" takes care of them. Maybe the appeal is that I want the characters to feel better? Maybe the people writing them are now older and therefore writing things that I want to read? I honestly have no idea what the sudden appeal is.

So, come talk to me. Have I been sleeping on these fics? Do you read them? If so, are they good? Or are they just a wet dream written out at 2AM?

Alrighty, so I said I would give myself until the Christmas fests, and Owls has closed signups. So, here I am. A little battered, but I'm here.

This year has been an utter disaster, to be quite honest. Between injuries, a dead dog, getting sick, and now a death scare (doctor thought that a rapid heartbeat might have been liver failure. Turns out it's anemia -_-), it's just been non-stop. So, I'm looking forward to having a bit of fun for Christmas.

There will be a few changes here for the journals. My weekly post will be absolute bullshit if I continue to try to post recs for HP art and fic. Because, let's face it, I'm not reading HP stuff right now. I might post some recs for things other than HP. Or maybe something to just chat about with fandom in general. Even if it is only me chatting. I seem to be quite good at talking to myself. XD

Well, it's probably surprising that I remember how to do these. It's been three weeks since the last one. And probably four or so before that. *sigh*
I've been in pain. Partially my own fault for being a fucking moron, partially my body hating me. I've not really been reading or writing, other than actual books. Finished two this past month so far. Beyond that, not much.
